Transfer stations and convenience centers are county-operated facilities where Hawaii residents can drop off household waste, bulky items, green waste, and recyclables. These sites serve as intermediate collection points — waste is consolidated here before being transported to a landfill or processing facility. For residents who miss curbside pickup, need to dispose of oversized items, or simply have more waste than their regular collection can handle, transfer stations are the most affordable and accessible option.
Each Hawaiian county operates its own network of stations with slightly different rules and accepted materials. In general, most transfer stations across all islands accept the following:
Hazardous materials — including paint, solvents, pesticides, propane tanks, and automotive batteries — are not accepted at transfer stations. Each county holds periodic household hazardous waste collection events for these items. Visit your county's environmental services website for upcoming dates.
Residential self-haulers on Oahu, Kauai, and Hawaii Island can use transfer stations at no charge with a valid Hawaii ID. Maui County charges by weight at the Central Maui Landfill. Commercial haulers pay tipping fees at all locations.
